Kathakbox

Kathakbox brings together Indian Kathak dance’s grace and vigour and the rhythms & rhymes of Hip Hop culture. Complex percussive patterns converse with beatbox and the verbal dexterity of Kathak rap (Kavitt) layers with urban poetry.
Kathakbox does not ‘box in’ these genres to a particular time or place, but discovers the raw spirit and heartbeat of each art form which reverberate between cultures. Reflecting the diverse, intersecting rhythms of the human experience, Kathakbox encourages us to ‘think outside the box’.

Ekalya

A modern classical celebration of Persian and Indian artistry expressed through the intricate language of Kathak dance.
‘Ekalya’ (from the Sanskrit: ‘solo’) is a composition that intimately beautifully crafts dance with live music. Sonia explores the classical roots of Kathak in this two-part solo programme. Focussing on precise footwork, rapid turns, complex rhythms and poignant mime and gesture, this creation is a striking display of both the skilled and dramatic aspects of Kathak.
Although the compositions derive from the traditional idiom, Sonia’s personal approach creates a novel and modern presentation of the classical.
This stunning solo production features evocative live music from an ensemble of musicians on the sitar, the harmonium and through the use of vocalisations. The musical creations are also involve the influential contributions of the world renowned maestro Sarvar Sabri on tabla, performing rare and novel compositions in Indian classical music.
Hatke

’Hatke’ as the title suggests, is 'surprisingly different' as unannounced dancers ‘break-out’ into joyful, ‘funky’ contemporary Kathak in the city streets, surprising and delighting passers by. With its smart, ‘earthy’ and up- to-date choreography and construction, ‘Hatke’ is an innovative way to reach a diverse audience that is positioned ‘outside’ the traditional space of the theatre spaces. It is a piece that also breaks down the perceived notions of Indian classical dance.
’Hatke’ was originally commissioned by The Big Dance, 2008, a UK-wide celebration of dance. It was first performed by 50 young dancers over a busy day in two locations in Birmingham city centre.
